Mountain Trail at Munnar : Munnar is located on the Eastern part of the Southern Western Ghats and is surrounded by Highrised Mountains. In 1180 AD, one of the brothers of the King Sundarapandian had purchased this area from the then Maharaja (king) of Travancore. Later the area was given to a foreigner for agricultural activities, consequently Tea plantations were established in 1897. The most important natural Sandal wood plantation in South India is maintained in Marayur besides ancient mural arts and old caves. Apart from these, Eravikulam National Park and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary are worth seeing. Majority of the grassland area is covered by Neelakurinji (Strobulanthes kunthianus), which blooms once in 12 years. Nilgri Tahr (Himitragus hylocirus) one of the endangered mountain goats in the world is endemic to this area. On average, the plateau is situated at an elevation of above 2000 MSL and Anamudi (2695 MLS), the highest peak in South India is located here.
Program
The program start at 3.30 Pm from Munnar by jeep to a place from where trekking start. Trekking starts 8 kilometers to basic camp . Next day trek begins at 8. Am and ends on the highest peak (2545 MSL ) Third day program starts at 8 Am and trekking continue at 4 Pm and then camping and next day morning trek back for brase camp and back to Munnar by vehicle
The program covers many valleys peaks the plantations and managed and natural forest are worth seeing . Wild animals and birds as well as plants are peculiar to this hills . among the wild animals , elephants basins Nilgiri lancore Nilgiri tar mongoose are common ones . Wild plants such as ‘Neelakurinji” (which flowers once in twelve years) Rhododendsons Orchids are the rare species which found only in Himalayas and Munnar hills . Birds and butterflies are very rich in this hills
